The impact of proof steps sequence on proof readability - experimental setting

چکیده
Different sequences of proof steps may result in different experiences of the overall formal proof clarity. There is a conjecture that sequence in which more steps refer to the content of the preceding statement (1) is more comprehensible than the one in which references span longer distances (2). We studied the claim in experimental setting where subjects indicated their reading preference with two versions of the same proof. The difference between their reports indicates that contrary to the conjecture, proofs of the kind (2) can give cognitive advantage in a statistically significant way.

متن کاملA SHORT PROOF FOR THE EXISTENCE OF HAAR MEASURE ON COMMUTATIVE HYPERGROUPS
In this short note, we have given a short proof for the existence of the Haar measure on commutative locally compact hypergroups based on functional analysis methods by using Markov-Kakutani fixed point theorem.
متن کاملA new proof for the Banach-Zarecki theorem: A light on integrability and continuity
To demonstrate more visibly the close relation between thecontinuity and integrability, a new proof for the Banach-Zareckitheorem is presented on the basis of the Radon-Nikodym theoremwhich emphasizes on measure-type properties of the Lebesgueintegral. The Banach-Zarecki theorem says that a real-valuedfunction $F$ is absolutely continuous on a finite closed intervalif and only if it is continuo...

متن کاملA New Proof of FDR Control Based on Forward Filtration
For multiple testing problems, Benjamini and Hochberg (1995) proposed the false discovery rate (FDR) as an alternative to the family-wise error rate (FWER). Since then, researchers have provided many proofs to control the FDR under different assumptions. Storey et al. (2004) showed that the rejection threshold of a BH step-up procedure is a stopping time with respect to the reverse filtration g...
